This well-written and interesting account follows the notorious career of Kentuckian Parker Hardin French from his days as a commission merchant in St. Louis to his filibustering adventures in Mexico and Nicaragua through his work as an apparent representative of the Knights of the Golden Circle during the Civil War. The author’s own distant relative was scammed by French which apparently gave him the impetus to research French’s nefarious exploits through numerous primary sources and newspaper articles. A fascinating read!
